According to News Nation, another Connecticut town has officially made the move to a four-day workweek. The Town of Canton, Connecticut will no longer have their employees at their desks on Fridays.

Canton First Selectman Kevin Witkos released a statement that says:

“Many of the reasons residents visit town hall can be accomplished electronically as we have seen a decline in foot traffic throughout the years. Additionally, the four-day work week for town staff recognizes the proper work-life balance that we believe will have a positive effect on our talented hard-working staff and enable them to better serve the community Monday -Thursday.”

Town officials say they believe this will save taxpayers money and the new schedule goes into effect on Monday, Sept. 16. Canton joins three other Connecticut towns that have made the move to the 4-day work week.

These are the 4 CT Towns that now work just four days a week:

  • Canton
  • Plainville
  • Vernon
  • Mansfield

Back in March, ABC News released some data that suggest the four-day workweek actually makes employees more productive. They shared the results of a U.K. four-day workweek pilot program and this is what they found:

  • 61 U.K. companies participated in the pilot study.
  • 89% of these companies continued with the four-day workweek after one year.
  • 51% of the companies have made the four-day workweek a permanent change.
  • 100% of managers and CEOs reported a "positive" or "very positive" impact from the four-day workweek.
  • 82% of companies noted improvements in staff well-being.
  • 50% of companies observed a reduction in staff turnover rates.
  • 32% of companies reported noticeable improvements in recruitment.
  • The pilot involved completing 100% of the usual workload in 80% of the time (32 hours) with no reduction in pay.

So, who will be next? Maybe Danbury, Stamford, Hartford, Waterbury? Who knows but I'm hoping they all fall like dominos for everyone's sake. Humans were not meant to work 5-days a week. It's just not the right way to live.
