Exploring the Creepy Abandoned Buildings of Connecticut’s Mansfield Training School Hospital
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. By doing so, you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing on private property.
According to Wikipedia, a hospital was built in 1860 and offensively titled "The Connecticut School for Imbeciles." 55 years later, in 1915, the name was changed to the Connecticut Training School for the Feebleminded, which is also equally offensive. In 1917, it merged with the Connecticut Colony for Epileptics (founded at Mansfield in 1910) and acquired its present name, the Mansfield Training School and Hospital.
During the 1960s, Mansfield Training School Hospital was treating patients with all kinds of mental disorders as the patient population soared to 1,700 residents and 875 full-time staff. As the '60s turned into the '70s and '80s, the allegations of abuse, overcrowding, poor conditions, and lawsuits became significant problems for the hospital.
In 1993, Mansfield Training Center closed its doors for good and sent its remaining patients to outpatient facilities and other institutions. I invite you to view my photo gallery to see the eerie photos of what's left of the MTS and to read more about what went on.
