Three Greater Waterbury High Schools Partner Up For Ice Hockey Teams

In this era of pay to play and entire athletic programs being eliminated due to budget cuts, it's nice to see a trio of greater Waterbury high schools coming together to create a co-op team in a sport that's not offered at any of the schools.

I still keep up on the news at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, even though I graduated nearly 40 years ago. My alma mater has just announced that Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Pomperaug High School in Middlebury, and Watertown High School have reached an agreement to create a co-op ice hockey team comprised of male players from each school, and options will also be offered for female ice hockey players at other schools around Connecticut.

According to holycrossct.org, Watertown High School will act as the host school for practices for the new team, and the games will be played at the gorgeous Mays Rink at nearby Taft School in Watertown.

Congratulations to the athletic directors of all three schools for coming together and sharing their resources, Connecticut is not known as the center of the ice hockey world, but after Quinnipiac's National Championship at the Frozen 4? And UConn's recent run at greatness? Ice hockey teams all over Connecticut are earning respect with every game.

I'd be interested to see how many lacrosse players from Holy Cross, Pomperaug, and Watertown make the transition and lace up their skates to take to the ice, and what this new co-op team will call themselves.
