Has a professional scammer ever lured you in? An acquaintance of mine recently told me he received an email from a scammer saying he had video and photo proof that this individual had been on multiple porn sites and would send that proof to his family and friends if he did not follow the scammer's instructions. This is called a Blackmail scam.

Blackmailers usually threaten to distribute private content that can embarrass you if they don't get your money—on your computer or phone, via email, text, or social media. The scammers may be complete strangers or people you have met online and thought you could trust. They may ask you to wire money or send it via a mobile app, gift card, or cryptocurrency.

According to Forbes.com, Connecticut ranks among the Top 20 states that are being scammed of $13.4 million. The Top 3 most scammed states are:

  1. California: Fraud Capital of the U.S...
  2. Florida: Imagine That!...
  3. New Jersey...

Recently, an article titled "FBI and Connecticut Attorney General Warn of Scams" appeared on the FBI/gov website. The video transcript reads as follows:

Voicemail Assistant: You have three new voice messages. First voice message

Scammer 1: Grandpa, I'm in jail. I got in a car accident, and it was my fault. I need you to pay my bail, which is $10,000. You can't call Mom and Dad; they'll be too upset.

Voicemail Assistant: Next message

Scammer 2: Mr. Smith, your bank account has been compromised. Let us help secure your money.

Voicemail Assistant: Next message

Scammer 3: We are calling to inform you that you must pay a penalty for not filing your taxes on time. You owe the IRS $10,000; if you don’t pay immediately, a warrant will be issued for your arrest.

There's a superb article on the website, socialcatfish.com titled, "How to Spot Scam Calls: Sweepstakes Scam Calls and Other Sneaky Scammer Tactics." The article informs you on how to stop and report scam calls. If it sounds or looks to good to be true, most likely it is.
